National Highways: A38 Saltash Tunnel update (12 May 2026)

Key milestone fast approaching in our technology upgrade at Saltash Tunnel

We’ll soon be approaching a significant milestone with our new lane control system at Saltash Tunnel and across the Tamar Bridge.

We’ve been undertaking rigorous safety testing of the new system to ensure it’s working as it should.

The overhead signals are now displaying the green arrows and red crosses to reflect the current traffic management. These will stay in place until the tidal flow control system goes live.

Safety testing is almost complete and very soon we’ll be switching on the new tidal flow lane control system.

Once live, it will mean that we can once again change the direction of traffic via the overhead signals.

We will let you know in advance what date the system will be going live.

Until then, please continue to stay in lane.

The scheme will fully complete later in 2026.
