National Highways: A38 Saltash Tunnel

August 2025 update
We’re currently carrying out an extensive programme of work to upgrade the technology in and around the tunnel, including the control system. This update of the systems will future-proof the structure for many years to come.

Scheme update
We’re progressing phase one of our works as we continue our major upgrades to the A38 Saltash Tunnel.

Piling works and concrete foundations are now complete. This paves the way for installation of four, eight by nine-metre gantries at the end of August. The new gantries will house electronic information signs displaying live traffic and travel information.

The ducts underneath the road that will eventually house the new cabling, are in place. The team are continuing their works to pull huge swaths of cabling through the tunnel to the bridge and out to the separate control buildings.

Switch to rail, this September!
As a result of close collaboration between National Highways and Great Western Railway (GWR), GWR have been able to commit to a limited number of temporary additional train calls at Saltash (up to 29 train calls per day) for the duration of the tunnel works to help ease congestion in the area. For the residents of Saltash, this means more trains than ever offering a 10-minute journey time into Plymouth for as little as £2.75 if you hold a railcard.

For customers from South East Cornwall wanting to avoid the extra journey time by road this autumn, Park & Ride car parking capacity is available at Liskeard Station, with every train stopping throughout the day and non-stop trains taking only 25 minutes to reach Plymouth, offering the potential for significant journey time savings during the works.

August Bank Holiday
Work on the Saltash Tunnel scheme will stop over the bank holiday weekend. Speed restrictions and traffic management will remain in place. Work will pause on Friday morning at 6am until Tuesday at 8pm.

September Westbound resurfacing scheme
National Highways are undertaking resurfacing of the A38 between St Budeaux and the Tamar Bridge Toll Plaza from the 1 to 26 September, overnight on weekdays. Please be aware that a new road layout will be in force, more information is available at www.nationalhighways.co.uk/sw-maintenance , under A38 St Budeaux to Tamar resurfacing. The Saltash Tunnel Scheme will be paused at this location during this time and will resume on the 1 October.

Update on Torpoint ferry LYNHER refit

Update on LYNHER refit

9 April 2025

Torpoint ferry LYNHER has been successfully moved into drydock in Falmouth, enabling work to begin on the refit.

The refit process is expected to take up to eight weeks to complete.  With strong winds preventing the ferry from being moved into drydock last week as expected, this may result in a change to the planned refit schedule and the vessel’s return to service.

We will be working closely with A&P Falmouth to manage the refit programme and ensure that the ferry returns to service as quickly as possible.

During the refit period the service is being provided by the two remaining ferries, one leaving each side of the river every 15 minutes (on the hour and 15, 30 and 45 minutes past the hour), between 06:30 and 22:00 and a single half hourly, night service ferry from 2200 to 06:30.

Regular updates on the service are being provided on the Tamar Crossing’s website and social media channels.

National Highways: A38 Saltash Tunnel – date confirmed for start of overnight closures

A38 Saltash Tunnel – date confirmed for start of overnight closures

We’re carrying out a major £25million technology upgrade of the A38 Saltash Tunnel. The works will help keep journeys safe, reliable and reduce the risk of unplanned closures.

Upcoming works

Starting Monday 13 January – Overnight tunnel closures

Starting on Monday 13 January, the overnight tunnel closures will begin as we start working to modernise the A38 Saltash Tunnel.

From Monday 13 January until the end of February 2025, the eastbound carriageway of the tunnel will be closed on weeknights (8pm to 6am) to enable works in and around the tunnel.

To limit disruption, our initial closures will only affect eastbound traffic. Westbound traffic will be able to use the tunnel as usual.

Eastbound traffic will use local diversion routes. The tunnel will be open as normal during the day and at weekends.

By closing the tunnel only at night, we can reduce the impact on the local community and drivers.

At the end of February, the full overnight closures will begin in both directions. We will provide further updates in due course.

The overnight tunnel closures will continue until Winter 2025 / 2026.

Diversions

From 13 January until the end of February 2025, eastbound traffic will be diverted overnight from Carkeel roundabout via the B3271 and North Road.

Occasionally, our works may generate some noise for which we apologise.

We understand that overnight works can be frustrating, but we thank you for your continued understanding while these essential works take place.

Please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journeys.

As with any complex scheme, dates are subject to change. As we move through the scheme, dates will be announced and kept up to date on our dedicated webpage. Please check online for the latest information. You can also sign up via the webpage to receive notifications when new information has been added. In addition, you can also check our daily closures page or find live travel information on our Traffic England website.

We continue to work closely with a wide range of stakeholders while we confirm the full programme of works for next year. We will share this information with you once it becomes available.

We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused but thank you for your continued understanding.

Environment Agency/ Bridge Civil Engineering Ltd – Langreek Screen Works – Road Closure

Bridge Civil Engineering Ltd apologise for any inconvenience caused by the road closure.

The road closure is necessary for the safe delivery of the project and has been assessed and accepted by Cornwall Council Highways as the correct method of Traffic Control in this instance. Having a lane open s not an option due to legislation defined in the Highways Code of Practice. While the road is not open to traffic, we must provide safe pedestrian and wheelchair access for the duration of the works.

The narrow road is supported by a wall which is being altered by the works. Therefore, the road will be unsupported and unable to carry traffic until the works to wall are complete.

Therefore, we appreciate your understanding and co-operation by not trying to access the road closure, other than on foot. Attempting to drive through the road closure puts the driver, the public and our workforce at serious risk.

The road closure diversion route is shown alongside this poster.

Should you need to contact us please use the following email address: bkneeshaw@bridgecivileng.co.uk

We also have a feedback letterbox on the outside of our site fencing.
